Richard Blumenthal

State:Connecticut
Current Office:U.S. Senator
Race Winner: U.S. Senator  (Incumbent)
Party:Democratic Party

Richard Blumenthal assumed office as Connecticut's Junior Senator in Washington in January, 2011, taking the seat formerly held by Chris Dodd.

Before winning the Senate race, Blumenthal was a long-time Attorney General of Connecticut, from 1991-2011.

Blumenthal was frequently considered a top prospect to run as the Democratic candidate for Governor of Connecticut but he did not challenge Republican governors John G. Rowland or M. Jodi Rell in the elections of 1998, 2002, and 2006.

After Sen. Dodd announced on January 6, 2010 that he would retire at the end of his term, Blumenthal told the Associated Press that he will run in the election for Dodd's seat in November. He defeated Republican Linda McMahon to win the senate seat.

I think it's time for career politicians to sit down. They should all have a definate term. They retire and nothing changes for them, their pay, their health care. My brother died in the vietnam war, I have a serious problem that is what he chose to lie about!

Service of our country is admirable but, as veterans themselves have stepped forward to say, does not necessarily qualify you to serve in public office. Blumenthal's misstatements re the extent of his service do not negate his almost 20 years of experience serving the state of CT as Attorney General. Like the General Counsel of any company -- the corporate equivalent to this public office -- this individual is often the integrity of the organization and remains installed across many administrations (often GC is the only exec that survives changes in power at private companies) because they hold in their heads the history of the organization, understand the human dynamics and know what has worked and what has not worked. We need this kind of knowledge at this critical point in our state's effort to not only survive the economic downturn, but transcend it. Linda McMahon is probably a very nice lady and has spent millions having her friends tell us so in tv ads. But, whatever her potential as a senator, we cannot afford the on-the-job-training that would be required for this untried, untested, heavily insulated businesswoman and housewife. Party affiliation aside, Blumenthal is simply and by far the most qualified candidate for this critical job.

He is not perfect, noone is - If we denied everyone who had something in their past they would rather forget, we would NEVER have ANY politicians in Congress. I would rather have him than McMahan. AT least he has experience which she does not.

Many politicians have "misspoken", if we were to reject them for this we would have a very small choice of candidates. He is a tireless fighter for the rights of connecticut. His opponent has said very little about what she would actually do, she has however spent a lot of time and money vilifying Mr. Blumenthal. She is no second choice!

At least Blumenthal did not run to Canada or Mexico during the VietNam war, and he did servce his country even though he wasn't actually over there. As as far as his being called "Rambo", remember Sly Stallone was also misunderstood and he tried to do the right thing in fighting a corrupt Sheriff and others. As far as the many times he has sued Corporations or others, that is his job as Attorney General.

what a poor acceptance speech. true colors of a liberal coming out during that one. what ever happened to winning graciously?

He is Chris Dodd lite. He plays to the cameras all to much. We need someone who will make the tough choices and not just pull the party line.
Mac
He will not change anything he will support the party and ignore the people of CT. He will be another Chris Dodd. Why else would President Obama come here to campaign for him?
Leeman
I oppose blumey, I am a Vet, anyone who lies about their service is a low life in my eyes. He was very supportive of Dodd & could see no wrongdoing on Dodd's part.
