Hartford, Conn. (WTNH/AP) — Connecticut lawmakers have agreed to take up legislation this session to repeal the state's death penalty.
The legislature's Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted 23 to 15 to raise the bill for discussion.
Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield, a New Haven Democrat, said he's been working to gain the support of state legislators who previously opposed repeal.
A full public hearing will be held within the next few weeks to discuss the issue.
"In my opinion, doing away with the death penalty, the way they want to do it, and put them in with the general population is actually rewarding them for their crimes," said Rep. Al Adinolfi.
Representative Adinolfi lives a few doors down from where the Cheshire home invasion crime occurred. The two men convicted in the deaths of a woman and her two daughters are now on death row.
Three young women were murdered in State Representative Steve Mikutel's district in Griswold in the 1980's by serial killer Michael Ross.
"Those kind of callous killers deserve the death penalty and the courts have upheld the death penalty," Rep. Mikutel said.
With the Cheshire killers trials now concluded votes at the capitol are expected to change.
With the Governor on board, advocates of repeal feel the timing for repeal is better than it has been the last two times it was attempted.
"Dan Malloy ran on this issue as one of the issues that he supports, that being the abolishing of the death penalty," said Rep. Holder-Winfield.
Three years ago a repeal bill passed the Assembly but less than 24 hours after the bill arrived on her desk then Governor Jodi Rell vetoed the bill saying the death penalty sends a clear message to those who would contemplate cold calculated crimes, like the Cheshire home invasion two years earlier.
Dr. William Petit, who had pleaded with lawmakers not to pass the bill, thanked the Governor for what he called her moral courage in clearly standing up for what's right.
Last year the repeal bill passed the Judiciary Committee but never came to a full vote in the House or Senate because State Senator Edith Prague announced she had changed her vote after a personal appeal from Dr. Petit.
She returned to the Capitol late in January after recovering from a mild stroke and in an exclusive News 8 interview said that she could change her vote again.
Another State Senator, Democrat Andrew Maynard of Stonington who said he would vote against repeal last year now says he will support it.

Well, the Criminals will commit more Violent Crimes now that they know they will not get the Death Sentence, they'll figure the most they'll get is Free Living and Food for the Rest of their lives and a possible chance to Go and DO IT Again.
Another pat on the back for the Criminals.
Malloy just wants a pat on the back for saving money which it won't do because the Murder Rate will soar and the State will have to hire more Court,Prison Staff and Lawyers etc,etc,etc.....to take care of our POOR LITTLE CRIMINALS, the poor babies.
Just remember that when they come to Visit Your Home in the middle of the night.
Remember How You Let Them Know It Was Ok Just To Barge Right In Shall WE Say.
Remember You Will Be Saying IT IS OK WITH ME YOU RAPE MY FAMILY and BURN THEM ALIVE.
Remember TO LOOK EVERY POLICE OFFICER IN THE EYE AND SAY I LET THE CRIMINALS KNOW IT WAS OK TO EXECUTE YOU, BUT FIRST I WILL ALLOW THEM TO BUMP INTO YOU AND CHECK TO SEE IF YOU ARE WEARING A VEST.
Remember to LOOK EVERY STATE POLICE OFFICER IN THE EYE AND SAY I LET THE CRIMINALS KNOW THAT THEY CAN ROB A GUN STORE AND USE THE GUN THEY STOLE TO SHOOT AND KILL YOU WHEN YOU PULL YOUR PATROL CAR INTO A PARKING LOT.
MAKE SURE YOU LOOK THEM IN THE EYE WHEN YOU TELL THEM WHAT YOU DID.

I am concerned that over and over again, our elected officials DO NOT listen to those of us who have voted them into office. When a poll shows that 80% of listerners to WTNH do not want the death penality appealed what are we to do? The arrogance to think that they know better. To mainstream convicted hard core criminals into the dayily life of society, why not just give them the key to Connecticut and we cal all move out?! Prison is a punishment - they have no rights. If you kill, you face the most severe of all punishments - losing your life. We must have something to deter criminals. DO NOT make this a financial issue...make this a proper ethical/moral and safety of us ordinary citizens who voted you into office. I do not want to live in fear of what criminals are running about - there are too many of them right now who have not gotten caught.
The Governor and his supporters need to do the right thing instead of political paybacks. Perhaps we should repeal the Governor...he was a bad choice. I'm a democrat that just sent independent - I am so embarrased for my state.

I agree over 60% of the people of this state want the death penalty. The governor does not speak for us or decide for us. He is suppose ti represent the majority of the people. Not vote his OWN VOTE. Those of us who feel there is a great INJUSTICE being done here, we will not forget this, election time.
