Senate leaders want quick fix to budget woes

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut senate democratic leaders are pledging to work with Gov. Dannel Malloy to close the state's current $365 million budget deficit.

The Democratic governor said on Monday that within two weeks he will offer a plan to state lawmakers for closing the deficit.

Senate President Donald Williams Jr. and Majority Leader Martin Looney say they are committed to making the tough choices and cutting spending in order to balance the budget. They said Wednesday that they agree with Malloy that it is important to act quickly to fix the problem.

Democratic legislative leaders, who control the General Assembly, haven't set a date for a special legislative session to vote on the plan, but have asked the rank-and-file to set aside time during the week before Christmas for possible action.
