Deadline looms for post Conn. election audits

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Local election officials are facing a deadline to complete their audits of Connecticut's presidential election results.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill recently selected 75 voting precincts at random from a pool of 747 precincts that used optical scan machines on Nov. 6 for the review.

The communities have until Monday to complete the audits.

State law requires a hand audit of 10 percent of all polling places where optical scan machines were used in elections and primaries.

Merrill announced last week that 74 percent of registered voters turned out to vote in the election, slightly lower than the 2008 turnout when 78 percent of registered voters cast ballots.

She said no major issues were reported on Election Day, other than long lines in some polling places.
