Folks impacted by gun violence will testify at Capitol

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)-- Folks across Connecticut impacted by gun violence will continue to voice their concerns and recommendations to state lawmakers.

They shared their experiences on Sunday afternoon, at the State Legislative office building. They also announced their plans to testify at the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group.

Southbury native Stephen Barton will testify Monday. He was shot multiple times during the Colorado movie theater shooting last summer.

Barton and other Connecticut residents impacted by gun violence are calling for strict background checks and a ban on assault weapons like the ones used in the Sandy Hook and Aurora shootings.

"You know, if not for all the scars on my body, sometimes I wonder if I even believe that something so horrific could happen to me and my friends. I'm really hopeful that these sorts of events will spur people to action that is long over due," said Barton.

The legislature's gun violence prevention task force held its first hearing Friday.

The group will testify on Monday.
