Murphy learns guns before push for laws

SIMSBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- U.S. Senator Chris Murphy who is pushing hard to have the nation's gun laws tightened spent part of the day at the State Police gun range in Simsbury.

At the state police gun range, Senator Murphy got to see up close, the sheer power of an assault weapon.

"Depending on where you have your magazines configured on your body, the quicker you can do a re-load," said one state trooper.

Murphy came here to learn about the difference between a semi-automatic weapon which fired 18 shots in about five seconds and a fully automatic rifle that can fire off 30 shots in roughly three seconds.

Police experts explained the often subtle differences, that make one rifle legal in Connecticut but a virtually identical model against the law.

"But the lethality of this weapon versus this weapon, right, the difference in folding stock has nothing to do with the lethality of the weapon," said Senator Murphy.

Murphy is pushing legislation that calls for tougher background checks, a specific list of banned military style weapons and a ban on the type of high capacity magazines that can make these weapons killing machines.

"I think we should get them off the street, I think that these kind of weapons that are derivatives of military style guns should still be in the hands of the military, but we want to get the definitions right," said Senator Murphy.

Before leaving the range the Senator was asked about the second amendment and if the legislation he's calling for violates an American's constitutional right to bear arms.

"The real second amendment has always given people of this country through their elected leaders the ability to decide what guns are reserved for the military, what weapons are reserved for the military and what weapons are available to the public," said Senator Murphy.

And Senator Murphy requested that demonstration by the state troopers so he'd have a better perspective on the gun control measures he's pushing for on Capitol Hill.

CHUCKIE AND ALEX - you are showing just how LIBERALS think with their mouth - not their brain. I have just as much right to my opinion as you do and believe me I am not the ignorant liberal you guys are. Your opinion of me means nothing!
Sherri...Ive also read a lot of YOUR posts, trust me..there is NO ONE less informed or more ignorant of facts than you. You are without a doubt the world champion in ignorance
ALEX - I've seen many of your posts here and never noticed that you agree with everyone's opnione. Guess that makes you just as ignorant as I am!
And Sherri refuses to see anything she doesn't want to agree with, thankfully for her, ignorance IS bliss.
The junior senator is not making many points from what I have read throuout various articles. He is pushing himself and making a nuisance of himself at the same time. Why don't these know-it-alls leave it to the guys that know what they are talking about already without the need for lessons. Does anyone (besides liberals) really think Murphy is going to be the answer to their prayers on gun control? He is following the same "try to look good" that Obama did with that ridiculous picture showing up suddenly. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see!
Amazing how the morons that put forth Romney STILL can't accept the fact that he was a WORSE candidate then Obama was. If you thought Obama was the worst president, then think how bad Romney looked to people. At least Murphy made an effort to learn about the guns, most senators have NO clue what they mean by assault weapons or what they can do. Im sure Linda McMoron would have made the same effort to learn right???
So you don't work for a living. Got it.
My Governor, senator, and president are all Liberal Democrats. I voted for all of them and they are all Anti "GUN" (thank God) as am I. You and "YOUR" ideas are not getting many votes. It is time to pic up the clue phone Nobody or that is what you will continue to be, a nobody republican out in the cold again. You guys lost the election of Gov, Sen. and President.
You (blinky6567) are a mindless sheep. I presume you work for a living. Let me ask you, if Chris Murphy were to take a 60 minute tutorial on your industry, would that make him an authority in the manner capable of creating legislation to control it? Chris Murphy has a long history of being anti-gun, so can we now take it that in regards to all his previous legislation, he was unqualified? He has an agenda, much like the rest of the anti-gun crowd and this is only politics, pure and simple.
I support senator Chris Murphy all the way. He did the right thing in asking the state police to teach him what he needs to know to write the laws he wants to write. The man wants to do the right thing by asking for help and being open about it. He is not hiding anything. You rock Senator! Keep doing what you are doing!
