DCF seeks GPS devices to track cars

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The state Department of Children and Families has asked the state budget office to install global positioning devices in state vehicles to keep tabs on workers.

The Stamford Advocate reports the agency in charge of child protection and custody issues has asked the state budget office to install devices in 800 vehicles.

Social service agency officials say the investment would result in $240,000 in savings and provide a safer working environment for employees and clients by identifying locations where problems may occur.

Paperwork filed with the budget office also cited a need to address bad driving habits. The agency also said nonprofit organizations have cut overtime and gas costs with the devices.

The issue has come up before, though a recommendation for a pilot program for state cars in 2009 fell flat.

If they are doing their jobs they have NOTHING to be worried about. Milford,,its costs about HALF the price to buy a car for someone who qualifies then it does to expense it out,,its a LOT cheaper. What they SHOULD do is not let these people take them home at night.

Why are they given cars in the first place? Why can't they use their own cars, and submit expense reports for the state to reimburse them reasonable mileage? Proper mileage could be confirmed by use of websites such as Mapquest. The state would save the cost of new cars every couple of years, not to mention the cost of the insurance. Should something happen such as a child being removed from an unsafe home gets sick, the employee could be given a voucher to get the car cleaned at a local carwash.
