Ask the Mayor - John DeStefano

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) — News 8's Chief Political Correspondent Mark Davis sits down with Mayor John DeStefano for an exclusive edition of "Ask the Mayor."

The mayor made waves when he proposed allowing illegal immigrants the right to vote.

News 8's viewers sent in dozens of questions, including Anna in New Haven, who called in to our Voice of the People hotline to ask, "I would like the mayor to explain his definition of 'illegal.'"

Wayne in Branford said, "I would like to know, Mr. Mayor, why you didn't bring up this idea prior to the election? Because I think the backlash may have had a different effect than what actually happened."

Watch Mayor DeStefano's response to these questions and more.

I support your thinking all the way Mayor. I think this is a very good idea. I am happy to help and give a had up to our immigrant population. (ALL OF THEM) Many people in the area do not like and will not help immigrants legal or not. New Have is making a real difference. I am proud to call the New Haven area my home. It says we care!

Mayor, why is it everyone else had to go thru a legal process to be able to vote by getting citizenship and you want these people given special privileges? Why can't they do it legally like everyone else has? Was the last election too close for your liking and you are looking to get extra votes? It's time for you you to go

Before I support granting voting rights to illegal immigrants, I would consider granting voting rights to US Natural born citizens residing in the island of Puerto Rico, who do not have the right to vote in national elections. This despite the fact that they have served in all US wars, and fought for our rights, ever since the revolutionary war.
