Senator wants to cap hidden gas tax

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut has the distinction of having some of the highest gas prices in the country, but one state senator wants to help change that.

Connecticut has the highest gas tax in the nation, 25 cents per gallon, in addition to a hidden tax.

"I'm tired of paying everything in taxes to everybody, the government takes all the money you make away from you," said Guilford resident Bill Santarpia.

State Senator Len Suzio of Meriden is hoping to bring relief to taxpayers.

The hidden gas tax is called the gross receipt tax on the wholesale price of gas. When the wholesale goes up, so does this hidden gas tax, and there's no limit on how high that tax may go up.

Senator Suzio's goal is to put a cap on that hidden tax.

This was good news for people who've already had an expensive start to the day.

"I've got actually five kids, so I've got a big family at home and all that money that could be saved up for the kids is going to gas," said New Haven resident Jason Monge. "So, hopefully they can do something about it."

Senator Suzio's bill will be taken up when the legislative session starts on February 8.

Never happen! Malloy is not interested in lowering any tax and it was added originally to eliminate tolls after a nasty accident at a toll booth. You know this in Connecticut and its "Spend, Spend, Spend" till we run out of money. Then its "Tax, Tax, Tax" so they again can "Spend, Spend, Spend". And its not a hidden tax! LOL!

This wholesale tax was brought to you by the ROWLAND administration
