Prague returns to Capitol after stroke

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — State Sen. Edith Prague has officially returned to her duties at the Connecticut state Capitol following a minor stroke in December.

The 86-year-old Democrat from Columbia received a round of applause on Friday when she made an appearance at a news conference about home health services.

Prague appeared in good spirits and showed no outward signs of having suffered a stroke. She jumped into the simplifying the rules regarding home health care.

"I can speak personally about home care. So for me, this is a significant press conference," said Prague.

She said she never had a headache or any other symptoms that she noticed during the time when she had the stroke.

"My daughter came over on Christmas Day and she just took a look at me and apparently the left side of my mouth was pulled over to the side, and when she saw that she got scared," said Prague.

Prague went straight to the hospital and then physical, occupational and speech therapy.

"The only thing I have not gotten clearance from my Doctor is to drive myself wherever I want to go," said Prague. "My advice for stroke victims is; don't give up, you just keep going."

She said she plans to resume her full schedule of committee assignments when the legislative session begins on February 8th. Prague also gave some thought to running for election. She is not ready to give her seat up.

"I have thought about running again, and I am running again for my seat."

Prague has represented the 19th senatorial district since 1995. She is co-chairwoman of the General Assembly's labor and elderly affairs committees. She also served in the state House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990.
